Eagles on the March
After going 1-1 in their first 2 games, beating Sweetwater in their season opener and losing to Bishop Diego in week 2, the Santa Fe Christian Eagles football team rolled off 8 straight wins to finish the regular season with a 9-1 record. That strong record got them a #4 seed and a first round bye for the San Diego Section D3 Playoffs. With Head Coach Jon Wallace at the helm, the Eagles are trying to win their 1st Division 3 CIF Section Championship.
The Eagles came into the 2015-2016 season with a junior heavy squad, having only 1 senior starting on both sides of the ball. That senior is RJ Walker (RB/DB). Senior K Chase Bakkeby is the only other senior in a starting position for SFC. The Junior class fills out every other remaining starting position.
Led by 1st year starting Junior quarterback Connor Whitton, SFC put up big numbers with their high powered offensive attack this year. Typically a run oriented Wing-T offense, the Eagles surprised everyone by passing their way to success this season. Whitton displayed veteran like accuracy by ending the season with 1,547 yards passing (4th in D3), 19 TD’s (2nd) and only 3 INT’s. His completion percentage was 60% on the year (10th overall D3). He also added 277 yards on the ground and 9 TD’s.
Whitton’s favorite target on offense was 6´5˝ Junior TE Caleb Phillips. Phillips ended his season with 732 yards (6th in D3) on only 27 receptions and 7 TD’s. His 27.1 reception average ranked #1 in Division 3 by players with 10+ receptions on the season. With all of his success on offense, the place where he really showed his value to this team was on the defensive side of the ball. Phillips was a beast at linebacker for the Eagles, racking up 136 total tackles (76 solo) which led all D3 defenders. To put that into perspective, the next closest to him was 81. He ended the season ranked 7th in the entire county in tackles.
Head Coach Wallace believes the leadership of Connor Whitton and Caleb Phillips will lead them to a promising playoff run. “Those 2 guys (Whitton & Phillips) have led us all year long and I don’t see anything changing for the playoffs”. The Eagles will play the winner of the #5 Imperial vs #12 Del Norte game this Friday, November 13th at 7:00pm. SFC will be hosting the winner of this game at Torrey Pines High School on November 20th at 7:30pm.
